MELBOURNE (SNP Report): Elena Rybakina produced a fearless and commanding display to defeat world number one Aryna Sabalenka and clinch her maiden Australian Open title on Saturday, capping a remarkable fortnight at Melbourne Park with a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.

In a high-quality final between two players yet to drop a set en route to the title match, Rybakina avenged her loss to Sabalenka in the 2023 Australian Open final and underlined her growing reputation as one of the most formidable players on hard courts. The triumph marked her second Grand Slam crown after her breakthrough Wimbledon win in 2022.

The Moscow-born Kazakh, seeded fifth, set the tone early inside Rod Laver Arena, breaking Sabalenka in the opening game and maintaining relentless pressure with her powerful baseline hitting. Her aggressive shot-making paid dividends as she sealed the opening set 6-4, sending early warning signs to the top seed.

Sabalenka, chasing a historic Melbourne three-peat, responded with characteristic resilience in the second set. The Belarusian raised her intensity, eventually capitalising on a rare error from Rybakina to level the match at one set apiece and set up a tense decider.

The final set swung dramatically. Sabalenka surged to a 3-0 lead, appearing to seize control, but Rybakina refused to buckle. Displaying remarkable composure, she clawed her way back, erased the deficit and broke serve to lead 4-3. From there, the 26-year-old held her nerve, closing out the match with a thunderous ace that sparked restrained but heartfelt celebrations. “It’s an incredible achievement,” Rybakina said after the match. “It was a really tough battle. Aryna is a very strong opponent, and I’m just so happy to be holding this trophy.”

The victory capped an outstanding run of form for Rybakina, who has now won 14 of her last 15 matches and will rise to a career-high world number three in the WTA rankings. Her success further boosts the profile of tennis in Kazakhstan, which she has represented since 2018.

Sabalenka, gracious in defeat, acknowledged Rybakina’s brilliance. “She played an incredible match,” she said. “I fought until the last point, but today she was better.” With her Melbourne breakthrough, Rybakina has firmly established herself as a dominant force on the biggest stage, setting the tone for an intriguing season ahead.
