LAHORE (Abdul Basit): Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board Syed Mohsin Naqvi has said that the ‘time to beg India for talks has gone’, insisting that any future engagement with the neighbours will only be held on equal footing.

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore on Saturday, Naqvi underlined that Pakistan’s relations with India must now be based on parity, not compromise.

Turning to cricket affairs, Naqvi categorically distanced himself from the controversial exclusion of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. The decision, which sparked widespread criticism, was made solely by the national selectors, he clarified. “I do not have even one percent role in selection. We have a committee and advisors who deliberate extensively. My only instruction is: select on merit,” he said.

The PCB chief also addressed concerns about Rizwan’s future as ODI captain following Pakistan’s dismal run of defeats since their group-stage Champions Trophy exit earlier this year. He confirmed that the selectors, in consultation with head coach Mike Hesson, who has already submitted his performance report, will determine the captaincy issue.

Naqvi further explained the absence of Category A contracts in the newly announced central contracts, attributing it to underwhelming performances. He also praised Lahore’s Ghani Club for its grassroots contribution to cricket, urging more clubs to follow suit in promoting the game.
