MOUNT MAUNGANUI (SNP Report): A blazing half-century from Mitchell Marsh powered Australia to a commanding six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening T20I at Bay Oval on Wednesday.

Chasing 182, Marsh led the charge with a scintillating 85 off 43 balls, including 9 fours and 5 sixes, as the visitors wrapped up the match with 21 balls to spare. He was well supported by Travis Head (31), with the pair hammering 68 runs in the powerplay, dismantling New Zealand’s pace attack early.

Despite a brilliant unbeaten 106 off 66 balls from Tim Robinson, a late replacement for Rachin Ravindra, New Zealand’s total of 6-181 proved insufficient. The Black Caps, missing key players like Kane Williamson, Mitchell Santner, and Ravindra, struggled to contain Australia’s aggressive batting.

Early breakthroughs from Josh Hazlewood (1-23) and Ben Dwarshuis set the tone for Australia, reducing New Zealand to 3/17 in the opening overs. Although Robinson fought valiantly, a lack of partnerships hampered the hosts’ momentum.

Australia remained clinical despite being without Pat Cummins and Cameron Green. Matt Short (29), Tim David, and Alex Carey contributed handy runs, while Marcus Stoinis sealed the win with a boundary off his only ball.

New Zealand captain Michael Bracewell admitted the powerplay deficit proved too much: “Mitch and Travis took the game away from us early. We were always chasing after that.” The three-match series continues Friday, again in Tauranga.

SCORES IN BRIEF: NEW ZEALAND 181/6 (Robinson 106*) beat AUSTRALIA 182/4 in 16.3 overs (Marsh 85) by 6 wickets.
