Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Azam Khan experienced a bizarre and painful dismissal during the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 on Friday, as his team, Guyana Amazon Warriors, faced off against Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.
Azam, representing the Warriors in this high-stakes encounter, was struck by a ferocious bouncer from pacer Shamar Springer. The incident occurred in the 12th over of the run chase, as Azam charged down the pitch attempting a pull shot. However, the short-pitched delivery, bowled just outside off stump, rose sharply, brushing Azam’s right shoulder before crashing into his neck and deflecting onto the stumps.
Visibly shaken, Azam fell to his knees in pain, prompting the team physio to rush to his aid. After receiving immediate medical attention, he was escorted back to the dressing room. Azam managed to score just 9 runs from 9 balls, including one boundary, before his untimely dismissal.
Despite Azam’s early exit, the Guyana Amazon Warriors pulled off a thrilling three-wicket victory, thanks to a spectacular finish by Dwaine Pretorius. Facing Mohammad Amir in the final over, Pretorius smashed 18 runs, including a stunning last-ball six over long-off, to secure the win.
Amir had started the over strongly, but a series of low full tosses and short deliveries allowed Pretorius to find the boundary three times before sealing the game with a dramatic six.
This victory marked a significant moment in the CPL 2024, with Pretorius’ heroics ensuring the Warriors continued their strong start to the tournament.
