BULAWAYO (SNP Report): South Africa tightened their grip on the first Test against Zimbabwe on day three at the Queens Sports Club, thanks to a superb century by Wiaan Mulder, who powered the visitors to a commanding second-innings total of 369, setting Zimbabwe a daunting 537-run target.
By the close of play on Monday, Zimbabwe had reached 32/1, still requiring an improbable 505 runs to win. Opener Takudzwanashe Kaitano was the only wicket to fall, dismissed by Corbin Bosch for a cautious 17, after a steady 32-run opening stand with Prince Masvaure, who remained unbeaten on 5 at stumps. Nick Welch is set to join him on the fourth morning.
Earlier in the day, South Africa resumed their second innings at 49/1, with Tony de Zorzi (22)* and Wiaan Mulder (25)* at the crease. De Zorzi added just 9 runs before he was caught at slip off Tanaka Chivanga, but Mulder would go on to anchor the innings in style.
Mulder stitched together a series of valuable partnerships, including a 72-run stand with David Bedingham, who played a brisk knock of 35 off 39 balls, and a crucial 104-run sixth-wicket stand with wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne. Mulder brought up his second Test century during the innings, eventually falling for a brilliant 147 off 206 balls, laced with 17 fours and two sixes. Verreynne contributed 36 off 56 before his dismissal soon after.
Despite a mid-innings collapse that saw South Africa slip to 259/7, skipper Keshav Maharaj added further damage with a spirited 51 off 70 balls, ensuring South Africa’s lead swelled beyond 500. The innings was declared at 369, giving the Proteas a dominant position heading into the final two days.
For Zimbabwe, Wellington Masakadza was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4-98 in 22 overs, while Vincent Masekesa and Tanaka Chivanga took two wickets each. Wessly Madhevere and Blessing Muzarabani chipped in with a wicket apiece.
